The “path of the hills” – Hiwwel Route

The Rhine is one of the most important rivers in Germany, it crosses a vast territory and is very beautiful from a landscaping point of view. It is the ideal point of reference for a cycling route in the German countryside and is just what the Hiwwel Route represents.
The “path of the hills” or just Hiwwel Route starts at Bingen and ends at Worms along the hills near the Rhine.

The two cities are just 50 km away, but the hilly path is 165 km long, because it develops into “S”.

Starting from Bingen, follow the cycle path of the Rhine for several kilometers, meeting many river ports now in disuse. Then we enter in a cultivated area where we continue to pedal along very scenic paths and white roads.

Near Ingelheim the track goes south and then climbs up a slight uphill to head to the city of Mainz. Once you arrive at the outskirts of the city you have a wonderful view over the Rhine and the surrounding hills.

Overtaken Mainz are expecting at least 15 km in the plain along the route of an ex-railroad. We cross Undenheim, Gabsheim and Woerrstadt. Before arriving at Schwarzberg, a particularly scenic plateau, some hills and small towns have to be overcome.

The route continues in this way, between scenic climbing and long descents, between cultivated fields, farms and the Rhine views, for several kilometers to the old town of Alzey, which is worth a visit, and then to Worms.
