Ischia that you don’t expect: visit the island by bike

Despite its small size, Ischia Island can count on about 50 km of routes suitable for mountain biking and cyclotourism.
Cycling is still a novelty for the islanders and the local trails are still in development so for now we point out a quiet path on asphalt of average difficulty.

It is a tour of about 36 km with start and arrival at the port of Forio.
From the port, you begin to ride in the direction of Church of Rescue, famous for the beautiful white facade decorated with precious majolica of the ‘700. The view from the church is spectacular and on clear days you can see Ventotene Island.

The next stop is the Church of San Francesco, so the route goes to the sea, giving a wonderful view of the beach and the Mediterranean before entering the park “La Mortella”, large tropical garden.

From the park, you take the coast road back to the village of Casamicciola and then to Ischia port. You can not miss a stop at the Aragonese Castle connected to the island by a spectacular stone bridge that you can cross on bicycle.

After the break, you come back to ride up the hill of Mount Rotaro: fatigue very well paid by the panorama that is on top. To wait for the cyclist there is the Pineta della Maddalena that surrounds all the mountain and its ancient crater. It was a volcano, now extinct, but that has profoundly marked the history of the island for 400 years.

The best periods to visit Ischia by bicycle are winter, autumn and spring when the crowd of tourists has not yet filled the island. However, there is always a need to be careful on the roads, because the traffic may be a bit undisciplined even in the low season, especially on the coastal road.
