Family itinerary: from Rovereto to Avio

Family itinerary: from Rovereto to Avio

Among the cities of Rovereto and Avio, about 23 km distant, runs an ancient Roman road: the Claudia Augusta. Today it can be used as a cycle track. The route is known as the Vallagarina Cycle Track and is a perfect family itinerary. The track is packed with picnic areas, drinking water fountains, gazebo and play areas for children. All in a protected place where at most you meet some agricultural machines at work in the vineyards that border the path.

The Adige River runs parallel to the cycle track all along its length. You start following it just after leaving the old town of Rovereto and crossing it several times but never going away from its shores. Few km after the departure, near the village of Mori, you are in front of a crossroads, but the directions to continue on the bicycle are obvious: you can not get lost.
The asphalt of the track is smooth and compact, well maintained: it is not an obstacle even for children at first experiences. Except for a few short climbs, you always ride flat. Immersed in nature with the river on one side and the vineyards on the other, the kms run nicely.

You surpass the locality of Ala, famous for silk production, and when almost reached the destination, you can take advantage of the local Bicigrill which offers traditional dishes of the Trentino tradition and a small play area where the little ones can enjoy themselves in freedom. From here you can also enjoy a wonderful view of the medieval castle of Sabbionara, a true pearl of the area.

Once you reach Avio you can return to Rovereto by bike on the same road or by train.
The Vallagarina Cycle Track continues for another 50 km to Lake Garda, but decide whether to continue or not is to a personal choice to make.
