Eurovelo 7: the path of the sun

North-Cape

North Cape

From North Cape, the path of the sun points straight south to the Finnish border at 400 km.
Warning: Norway’s hinterland is still less inhabited than its coastline, so it will be necessary to plan accurately the stages to avoid unpleasant situations in isolated places. On the other hand, the landscape that you cross is spectacular; forests, rivers and lakes appear to be come out of a fairy tale! And even the short stretch in Finland isn’t far behind in terms of panorama.

Arrived in Sweden you follow the course of the river Torne to its mouth in the Baltic Sea. As you continue south, the villages along the river become bigger and the forests leave space to plenty of cultivated fields. At the height of Sundsvaal, the trail runs through some hills with minimum and continuous slopes, meeting ever more organized towns characterized by typical colored houses in northern Europe. You reach the coast in Helsingborg and from here you must take the ferry to Denmark.

In this country, the tourist infrastructures are very developed and proceed easily along the east coast from Elsinore to Copenhagen, crossing countryside and small towns. The journey remains calm and pleasant until the German border.

In Germany Eurovelo 7 flows into what was the German Democratic Republic, more precisely through the Mecklenburg- Pomerania region until the arrival in the capital. A stop in Berlin is a must for those who have never had a chance to visit it: the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, the Checkpoint Charlie are some of the most unforgettable attractions.

Beyond the city the track goes south, meets the Elbe River and begins to follow its course. This is how you come to Dresden in Saxony, it is a beautiful city with a particularly impressive historic center located a few kilometers from the border with the Czech Republic.

Once crossed the border, the route continues to slide along the banks of the Elbe by meeting many towns and crossing the great plain of Bohemia. It leaves the course of the river only in Melnik after about 320 km. It is its tributary Moldava that takes its place and leads to Prague.

From here, Eurovelo 7 begins to climb gradually, preparing cyclists to cross the Alps in Italy. The climbs end up arrived in Austria and after this obstacle you travel at least 340 km on flat on

secondary roads that sometimes cross the Danube to Linz. The cycle path along the Danube allows you to easily reach Passau and continue to Salzburg. In the town of Bischofshofen begins the climb of the Alps: slopes vary from 2% of the starting point to 10% of the high altitude point.

You trespass in the Pusteria Valley in the direction of Bressanone. In this city, the Eurovelo 7 connects to “the cycle path of the sun“, which allows to easily go down to Sicily. Once on the island you have only to take the ferry to Malta.
