How to do cyclotourism low-cost

Beyond the initial investment to have a bike and accessories suited to the path we have in mind, biking is a rather economical way of doing tourism.

For a few days, a city bike can fit well as long as it’s robust and able to handle unimportant dirt roads.
Of course, in terms of vibration absorption and speed, a real travel bike will always be superior. What matters is, however, to get to the destination.

With regard to the minimum kit for cyclotourism accessories you can’t give up to:

  • travel bags – there are many cheap models also waterproof
  • elastic ropes – to secure luggage to the luggage rack
  • spare air chamber and pump
  • screwdrivers, hex key and dampers

If you want to save money on the accommodation, you will need to have good camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag, cooker). Costs to stay at a campsite are usually very low and in many countries free camping is also allowed.

Technical clothing isn’t strictly necessary for cyclotourists, but be careful not to save on the right garments. You will certainly need some breathable underwear t-shirts that will allow you to absorb sweat and possibly some waterproof garments.
Fortunately, this kind of clothing today is affordable.

If it’s not important for you to find a comfortable bed and a hot shower at the end of the day, but it’s the passion that drives you to the adventure, here are some tips to save on your trip:

  • planning a trip to a known destination, from which home return is cheap (perhaps by train).
  • prepare in advance and take the food with you as long as you can keep it.
  • always prefer free camping.
