Cyclotourism along the Pyrrhus Canal: the Puglia countryside

The Pirro Channel, or rather the Pile, is located in Puglia. It’s a large karst depression about 12 km long and wide between 500 and 1,500 meters. The canal is within the municipal territories of Pitigliano, Castellana Grotte, Monopoli, Alberobello, Locorotondo and Fasano.
The legend tells that the King Pyrrhus passed through this area with an army of war elephants, archers and knights.

Between Castellana Grotte and Locorotondo there is a simple cycle path about 25 km. The route uses mostly dirty roads and provincial roads with low traffic which cross the local countryside.
You are pedaling alongside characteristic dry stone walls that delimit the agricultural spaces by separating vineyards from groves and tracts of wild vegetation.

Leaving Castellana Grotte you face a few short climbs, not very demanding. A few miles further down the panorama gives splendid views of the sea of Monopoli and of the trulli of Alberobello.
Once left the Pyrrhus Channel, the road continues to climb gently to the final destination: Locorotondo.
