Cycling in USA: Western Express Bicycle Route

The Western Express Bicycle Route is a 2541 km bicycle adventure that connects the city of Pueblo to San Francisco. Designed by the Adventure Cycling Association, the leading American cyclotourism promotion association, this itinerary crosses 4 states in the southwest of the USA: Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. For the arduous areas that it crosses, the climate and the expected altitude difference, the route is to be considered extremely demanding.

The best time to deal with the Western Express Bicycle Route is from May to October, but climatic conditions remain the main obstacle: in the desert areas there are sand storms and sometimes temperatures close to 40 ° C, while in mountainous areas you can encounter snow and ice. It’s important to start with the right equipping.

The itinerary provides continuous gaps and slopes between 6 and 14%. You also have to be prepared to deal with long stretches of street completely free of service. It is therefore advisable to carry with you everything necessary to repair any bicycle damages, water purifiers, tent or sleeping bag and all the camping equipment.

Indeed, from Garrison (Utah) to Fallon (Nevada), you pedal for over 500 km along the highway 50, considered in this section as “the most isolated road in America”.

Along the Western Express Bicycle Route there are numerous national parks such as: Bryce Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Travel by bicycle will give you the opportunity to fully appreciate the nature of these places and to be enchanted by their landscapes.
