Città di Castello and Upper Tiber Valley by bike

Città di Castello and Upper Tiber Valley by bike

Città di Castello is the main reference point of the Upper Tiber Valley and one of the most beautiful towns in Umbria. From here, you can go biking to explore the valley’s territory and the surrounding countryside.

For the itinerary we describe it is best to use a mountain bike because you are pedaling mainly on dirt roads. The route can be divided into two sections: a first uphill section and a second downhill section.

The ascent is over 10 km long, but with the exception of a few hundred meters there are no demanding slopes. You start climbing only after passing the Terme di Fontecchio, about 5 km after departure from Città di Castello. It takes some physical and mental strength, but even the less trained ones will be able to overcome it.

When you reach the top of Monte Penna turn left to start the descent. It is not a steep descent because it still has some short climb. This stretch is very impressive: it allows you to appreciate the panorama of the valley from above and admire its beauty.

The descent does not require special attention because it is always away from automobile traffic. At the end, you have the opportunity to ride between colorful fields of sunflowers and wheat. Once you reach the bottom you return to the starting point.
