How to choose the handlebar tape for your bike

The handlebar tape is an aesthetic and functional component of the bike. Its primary task is to allow a firm grip and soften the vibrations of the road that are affecting the hand and wrist. It also protects the bend of the racing handlebar from oxidation.

The handlebar tape is available in many colors and often has drawings or silk-screen prints.
It’s ideal for a cheap bike restyling.
In the market are available handlebar tapes in different materials to be used in dedicated contexts. The most common are:

COTTON – For a long time it was the only material, with the leather, used on bicycles. It’s okay to give a vintage touch or restore an old racing bicycle. It’s very thin and can be difficult to apply because it creates wrinkles. Furthermore, its thinness minimizes vibration absorption.

LEATHER – Very stylish, ensures a firm grip on the handlebar while not absorbing the vibrations very well. Today it’s mostly used for restoration and is rather expensive, but definitely durable.

GEL – State-of-the-art product, is actually a strip of plastic covered with a layer of gel. It’s easy to apply and absorbs vibrations in an excellent way. It’s the best solution for dealing with uneven roads and pavé.

EVA – This is a flexible and elastic plastic synthetic fiber, the same used for the soles of running shoes. Ensures a good grip on the handlebar because it tends to deform and take the fold of the hand when it’s compressed. It’s very durable and particularly suitable for those with small hands but needs a firm grip.

MICROFIBER – Offers a safe grip even in the event of rain. It’s breathable so it doesn’t allow the sweat of the hands to accumulate on the handlebar and create slippery surfaces.
