Orvieto, one of the most important art cities in Umbria, is an ideal destination for mountain bikers looking for spectacular panoramas and dirt roads out of the ordinary.
The proposed itinerary is aimed especially at beginner bikers or newbies in this sport because it doesn’t present any technical difficulty. The route, however, stretches to 95% on dirt roads so it is good to practice driving on uneven ground.
It is in total about 27 km.
The itinerary begins at the funicular car park, Orvieto Scalo area, and heads straight for the banks of the river Paglia. The first kms run smoothly along the watercourse, the first climb, as well as the only one in the path, occurs after a dozen kilometers.
After the 2km long climb, you reach the Chiesa della Sala, a place where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the valley below.
The panorama embraces much of the Castello della Sala estate, belonging to the Marquis Antinori, well-known excellent wine producers.
The first part of the descent leads directly into the heart of the Valley of the Calachi. Pedaling in the midst of these magnificent sandstone formations is a truly unique experience.
Continuing, the descent becomes more technical and requires more attention until it reconnects to the road of going along the banks of the Paglia river.
Then, go the way back to the parking where you left.
