“Primitivo Trail” in Mountain Bike

“Primitivo Trail” in Mountain Bike

The “Primitivo” is a nature trail that winds for about 30 km between Pitigliano, Sorano and San Quirico. We are located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, a wonderful territory known throughout Italy for its natural beauties, gastronomy and wine.

The trail is passable by mountain bike or on horseback, it is very scenic and well signposted. The “Custodi delle Vie Cave”, a local association dedicated to sport and culture, take care of the maintenance.

The departure of the route is fixed at the bastions of the Orsini Fortress, symbol of Sorano. Here is a convenient parking area where you can leave your car.

The first 6 km of the trail are definitely challenging. In fact, you cycle through the Calata Valley to the Conatelle area to reach the provincial road connecting to Pitigliano. The route then continues more easily along the banks of the Procchio stream. Following this watercourse you get to Valle Orientina and then to the Terme di Sorano. Along this stretch, less demanding, you are much more free to enjoy the view.

Starting from the spa, take the road of the Sugherella which leads first to Montesorano and then to San Quirico. Continue to Vitozza, an ancient Etruscan settlement and then into the Lente river valley where the route becomes challenging again.

Shortly, the valley returns to the starting point in the territory of Sorano.
