Essential tools for cyclotourists

For many cyclists the summer is the time of departure. Once you have chosen the clothes and personal items to carry with you, it is also time to ask yourself of what tools bring with you. Not always on the planned route there are specialized workshops that you can contact, but somehow it is necessary to take care of any damage.

Here is a list of indispensable tools for cyclotourists which allow you to manage emergency situations:

  1. Air chamber
A spare air chamber allows you to quickly replace the tire in case of drilling and resume the route in a few minutes. A tire on the ground is a very unpleasant inconvenience when traveling, especially if in remote areas.
It is also possible to use the mastic to temporarily repair the hole, but sooner or later the air chamber will must be replaced.
  2. Tire disassembler
This tool is used to get the tire out of the rim and for re-enter it once the operation is over. To equip yourself with an efficient tool you have to invest a bit of money, but then it will last a lifetime. Avoid steel tire disassembler that if used badly they can break the air chamber or scratch the rim.
  3. Multi-tool
Similar to a Swiss knife, however, it encloses keys of various sizes, all necessary to loosen or tighten the bicycle screws.
Before purchase it, however, it is best to check if the multi-tool gear is compatible with the screws of your bike.
  4. Chain-break and False-mesh
For wear or for too much effort the chain may break. Quickly solving the problem requires the use of a travel chain-break, lightweight and handy.
Instead of removing the broken mesh and reattaching the chain you can also use a false mesh. The latter can be mounted manually in all chains up to 9 speeds otherwise a special gripper needs to be used. The false mesh is very useful to cyclotourists because it allows to quickly open and close the chain.
  5. Pump
To inflate a punctured air chamber you inevitably need to have a hand pump. There are several models on the market, but in this case, it is better to make a good investment to have a durable tool. You can choose whether to put it in a purse or attach it to the frame, so you should consider size and material.
  6. Cable ties
Simple electrician ties can be useful as a solution to small problems: fix components or momentarily attach the meshes of a broken chain.
  7. Latex gloves
Gloves are useful not only to protect themselves from stains but also to avoid scratches or crushing on your fingers.
