Biking on the Lake between Como, Bellagio and Lecco

Biking on the Lake between Como, Bellagio and Lecco

The south shore of Lake Lario, Latin name of the most famous Lake Como, is an excellent destination for easy bicycle tours. The proposed route is just over 50 km long and, although there are continuous ups and downs, you don’t face any demanding climb.

Lake Como is the third Italian lake on surface, but once it was much larger because it included the lakes of Mezzola, Garlate and Olginate. The proposed itinerary explores exclusively the south shore of Como, Bellagio and Lecco. However, this route can easily be connected through the Lakes’s Cyclo Path with Lake Lugano, Lake Varese and Lake Como.

You always ride along the shore of the lake. This position allows you to enjoy wonderful views of the water and the mountains of the surroundings.

The route starts from Como and goes east along the SS583, keeping the mountains on the right and the lake on the left. You cross many places and small towns so you can take frequent stops. You will certainly want to stop in Torno, to visit its pretty old town, and to Nesso, home of a famous natural gorge created by the union of two streams.

Bellagio is about 30 km away, it’s the northernmost point of the route and from here you can admire most of the lake’s length. The city is an ancient Roman stronghold as well as one of the most beautiful localities crossed by the path.

Once overtaken Bellagio you start to meet smaller and peripheral villages but no less fascinating.
For example, the village of Malgrate, also called the Venice of Lario, because it’s rich in artworks.

To reach Lecco from Malgrate just cross the Adda river that stokes the lake.
