The Aare River Bicycle Trail

The Aare River Bicycle Trail, in the heart of Switzerland, is a journey of about 300 km which gives unique emotions. It’s a journey in close contact with nature, which is ideal for spring and summer when flowers and plants show their best appearance.
The track is reported ad the national cycling route No. 8.

The itinerary begins from the river’s source, at the glacier of the Grimsel Pass on the Swiss Alps, and ends when it thrown itself into the Rhine.
You will pedal without ever tackling demanding climbs on the mostly paved track and available for everyone, even the less trained.

During the route you will cross gorges, waterfalls, meadows, vineyards and lakes. There are also often characteristic mountain chalets and villages of breeders.
Due to the length of the Aare River Bicycle Trail, to enjoy fully the journey, you can predict more stops.

Grimsel Pass Spiez_Kirche_Schloss Bern Rheinbruecke-Schaffhausen-Feuerthalen

  1.  Meiringen – Interlaken 32 km
    A long descent immersed in the mountain landscape. Here you will find the Grimsel and Räterichsbodensee lakes, as well as the picturesque canyon Aareschlucht along 1400 m.
  2.  Interlaken – Bern 57 km
    Surrounded by high snowy peaks, you will find the dazzling blue lakes of Thun and Brienz. Also worth visiting is the village of Spiez with its castle and the fortress that dominate the track. Later, the mountain landscape leave room the plain to Bern, a World Heritage city.
  3.  Berne – Biel 47 km
    You still go on the plain along the shores of some hydroelectric power stations, lakes and canals up to Lake Biel.
  4.  Biel – Solothurn 28 km
    From the “metropolis of the clocks” we dive again in nature, in the valleys where storks nesting. These elegant birds accompany you to Solothurn.
  5.  Solothurn – Aarau 61 km
    Hydroelectric power stations and artificial canals continue to characterize the landscape, but the natural course of the river Aare doesn’t lose its charm. Aarau is a beautiful town with a very special historical center. The roofs of the houses are painted and some date back to the 16th century.
  6.  Aarau – Coblenza 35 km
    Once in Coblenza, the river Aare reaches its maximum size and throw itself into the Rhine.
  7.  Koblenz – Schaffhausen 48 km
    The historic city center is worth a visit, as is the famous Rhine Falls and the Schaffahusen village.
  8.  Schaffausen – Kostanz 45 km
    The Aare River Bicycle Trail ends at Kostanz, near the lake with the same name. It’s a popular tourist destination for Swiss people where it’s possible to bathe surrounded by hills covered with forests, meadows and vineyards. There are also many characteristic villages in this area.
